Newspapers on Demand
- Strategic partnership between PressTerra and NewsStand
Since the end of January, The Washington Post is printed
at Jamaica, which serves thousands of US tourists that visit the
island every year. Also, the Dutch Het Parool, the largest circulated
evening newspaper of the Netherlands, Italian Il Secolo XIX
and Libero, started printing in Portugal in order to serve millions
of tourists who visit the country during summers and winters.
NewsStand Inc and
PressTerra have signed a
partnership agreement to
expand the breadth of services and
reach for each. As per the agreement,
the first will process publishers’
content and develop the electronic
delivery platform, while the second
is to focus on reseller and
publisher acquisitions. The strategic
partnership between the two has
come into force since April 1, 2008.
The centerpiece of this partnership
is NewsStand’s eEdition Library
(eLi), originally developed to serve
the library and corporate markets.
eLi gives publishers and resellers
robust subscriber management
tools and complete control over the
user interface.
The cooperation between the two
allows publishers to make their
content available for viewing online
without the possibility of being
printed and to restrict those areas
where they do not want to be
available. Publishers can receive a
royalty for every time their content
is being viewed.
According to Guy Tasaka,
managing director of NewsStand,
“Our eLi product allows PressTerra
and its business partners a very
flexible platform to provide targeted
industry portals, private labeled
publication libraries as well as a
storefront.” Jerri Palmer, CEO of
PressTerra, added, “The
relationship between PressTerra
and NewsStand is one that will
enhance the offerings of both
companies to publishers and other
business partners.”
Ralph Vooys, vice president
operations of PressTerra,
commented, “With this cooperation,
PressTerra has become the ultimate
one-stop shop for publishers. They
can arrange printing at remote
locations against attractive rates,
they can make their content available
online and they can be used for ondemand
printing at locations where
there is a demand for their
publication. However one looks at
it, all solutions are eco-friendly, or
at least friendlier than the
conventional distribution. With fast
rising oil prices and, consequently,
rising aircargo rates, the solutions
we offer will be more attractive to
publishers every day.”
Through agreements, the US
Government receives digital copies
of newspapers via de services of
PressTerra since March 1. It will
also contribute to save the
environement, using less paper.

Founded in 1999, NewsStand with
headquarters in Austin, Texas, is
the leading digital partner for premier
publishers of newspapers,
magazines and books, and is one of
e-content magazine’s top 100
companies. Currently, the company
delivers digital content and delivery
solutions to hundreds of magazine
and newspaper titles as well as book
publishers in more than 120
countries. They provide robust
digital publishing solutions and
services, including archiving,
content management and
re-distribution, content repurposing,
replica editions, subscriber
management and custom publishing.
While PressTerra started its
operations in July 2006 after
having identified the need for
publishers to print their
newspapers in substantial
quantities outside their home
market. Their network of offset and
digital printing companies,
located around the world, are able
to produce EXACT copies
(meaning same format, colour and
paper quality). This network is
growing steadily and provides
publishers with the possibility of
being available at many locations
in the world. Utilizing these sites
not only saves valuable time but
often costs considerably less due
to the elimination of traditional
transportation costs. Apart from
print houses, they also offer a
network of distributors to serve
publishers that would like to start
distributing at a new location. The
company has built an in-depth
database that can provide
publishers with detailed
demographics about expatriate
and tourist markets around the
world. The process as they adopt
is very simple: publishers make
their content available to
PressTerra, who in turn ensures
that the right type of file is
transmitted to the print site on
time. After printing has completed,
the newspapers are picked up and
delivered to the publisher’s
preferred distributor.
