7th Annual Asia Media Awards 2008
- IFRA presents Asia’s best publications



Held in conjunction with Publish Asia from 2-3, April 2008, the 7th Annual Asia Media Awards competition was the most sought-after event. This prestigious contest was organised by IFRA Asia to promote the highest standards of quality and creativity in the publishing industry. The awards were conferred to the winners during a gala dinner at the MGM Grand, Macau, Special Administrative Region of China. Hundreds of newspapers and magazines in the Asia Pacific region and the Middle East have taken part over the past seven years. This year, a record number of more than 520 entries for all categories were received from the Asia Pacific region and the Middle East, a sign that newspapers are aiming at increasingly higher standards of print quality and journalism. The overall outstanding level of quality of these entries demonstrates that the Asian publishing industry is indeed in a very healthy state. This year’s winners in different categories included

Asian Newspaper Color Quality Awards 2008: Category 1- weekday circulation below 80,000 copies – Gold award won by The Business Times, Singapore Press Holdings Ltd; Silver by Berita Harian, Singapore Press Holdings Ltd; and Bronze by The Maharashtra Herald, Sakaal Paper Ltd. In category 2 - weekday circulation of 80,000 – 200,000 copies – Gold award was won by Lianhe ZaoBao, Singapore Press Holdings Ltd; Silver by Guang Ming Daily, Sin Chew Media Corporation Bhd; and Bronze by Gulf News, Al Nisr Publishing LLC. And in category 3, weekday circulation over 200,000 copies – Gold award was won by The Asahi Shimbun, Asahi Shimbun Co Ltd; Silver by Hindustan, HT Media Ltd; and Bronze by Hindustan Times, HT Media Ltd.

Best in Design Award: Category 1, Best in Newspaper Design (circulation below 100,000 copies) Gold Award was won by Sunday Morning Post, South China Morning Post Publishers Ltd; Silver by Al Ghad Newspaper, Jordan United Press; and Bronze by Sing Tao Daily, Sing Tao News Corporation Ltd – Art Department. In circulation over 100,000 copies, the winners were South China Morning Post, South China Morning Post Publishers Ltd – Gold; MINT, HT Media Ltd - Silver; and Ming Pao, Ming Pao Newspapers Ltd - Bronze.

In Best in Magazine Overall Design (circulation below 50,000 copies) category the winners were Icon Singapore (March 2007), SPH Magazines Pte Ltd - Gold; dpi- Design Popular Imagination Magazine vol.104, Handsome Technology Co, Ltd - Silver; Cake Vol.1, Revolution Press Pte Ltd - Bronze. In circulation over 50,000 copies category, Gold award was bagged by GADIS Magazine, PT Gaya Favorit Press.

In Best in Magazine Cover Design (circulation below 50,000 copies) category, the winners were Imagine Magazine, Sesame Seed Creatives Inc - Gold; Cake Vol 1, Revolution Press Pte Ltd - Silver; and Home Journal, Edipresse Asias - Bronze. And in circulation over 50,000 copies category, the winners were U Magazine, Hong Kong Economic Times Holdings - Gold; I Weekly (June 2007); MediaCorp Publishing Pte Ltd - Silver, TIME, Time Asia (Hong Kong) Limited – Bronze. In Best in Newspaper Front Page (circulation below 100,000 copies) category, the winners were Sunday Morning Post, South China Morning Post Publishers Ltd - Gold, Shanghai Daily - Silver; Al Ghad Newspaper, Jordon United Press - Bronze; and Judges’ Special Recognition award was bagged by The Week, Apex Press And Publishing. In circulation over 100,000 copies category, the winners were Gulf News, Al Nisr Publishing LLC - Gold; United Daily News - Silver; and Rajasthan Patrika, Rajasthan Patrika Private Ltd – Bronze.

Best in Newspaper Infographics – Breaking News (circulation over 100,000 copies) category the winners were South China Morning Post, South China Morning Post Publishers Ltd - Gold; Philippine Daily Inquirer – Silver; and Apple Daily, Apple Daily Publication Development Ltd Taiwan – Bronze.

In Best in Newspaper Infographics – Non-Breaking News (circulation over 100,000 copies) category, the winners were The JoongAng Daily News, JoongAng Sunday, Choi Jong-Yong, Hotel Airbus A380 – Gold; Apple Daily, Apple Daily Publication Development Ltd Taiwan - Silver; and The New Paper, Singapore Press Holdings Ltd – Bronze.

Best in Newspaper Supplement Award (circulation below 100,000 copies) category, all awards i.e. Gold, Silver, and Bronze were bagged by Ming Pao, Ming Pao Newspapers Ltd. In circulation over 100,000 copies category the winners were The JoongAng Daily News, JoongAng Ilbo, Cartoon Teenteen Economics - Gold; Silver and Bronze were bagged by Ming Pao, Ming Pao Newspapers Ltd.

Best in Special Coverage (newspaper special section circulation below 100,000 copies) category Sing Tao Daily - 1 July 2007, Sing Tao News Corporation Ltd, Art Department – Gold; Gulf News, Al Nisr Publishing LLC – Silver; Sing Tao Daily - 26 April 2007, Sing Tao News Corporation Ltd, Art Department, Bronze; and Judges’ Special Recognition award was bagged by The Jakarta Post (Youth Speak), PT Bina Media Tenggara.

In circulation over 100,000 copies, Mint, HT Media Limited won Gold; Joongang Ilbo Sunday, Special Report, The Joong-Ang Daily News - Silver; South China Morning Post, South China Morning Post Publishers Ltd and The Straits Times, Singapore Press Holdings Ltd won Bronze award. Best in Special Coverage: category 2, Magazine Special Issue (circulation below 50,000 copies) Off The Edge – Merdeka 50 years, The Edge Communications Sdn Bhd won Gold; Celebrate 25 Years of Local Drama, MediaCorp Publishing Pte Ltd won Silver; and WestEast Magazine - Issue No 22, WestEast Publishing Ltd won Bronze. And in circulation over 50,000 copies, the winners were U Magazine, Hong Kong Economic Times Holdings – Gold; and Ming Pao, Ming Pao Newspapers Ltd – Silver.

Best in Online Media: category 1 (circulation below 100,000 copies) www.shanghaidaily.com, Shanghai Daily won Gold; and www.alghad.jo, Jordan United Press won Silver. In category 2 for circulation over 100,000 copies, The Stomp Team, Singapore Press Holdings Ltd won Gold; www.smh.com.au , Fairfax Digital Australia & New Zealand Pty Ltd won Silver; and http://1- apple.com.tw, Apple Daily Publication Development Ltd Taiwan won Bronze. And Judges’ Special Recognition award was bagged by www.inquirer.net, Inquirer Interactive, Inc and scmp.com, South China Morning Post Publishers Ltd.

Best in Photojournalism Award: category 1, News Photography – General News, Himanshu Vyas of HT Media Ltd won Gold award; Ming Pao, Ming Pao Newspapers Ltd won Silver; and Jake C. Salavador, Manila Bulletin Publishing Corp won Bronze. In News Photography – Spot News category, Lim Wui Liang of The Straits Times, Singapore Press Holdings Ltd won Gold; Linus G. Escandor II of Manila Bulletin Publishing Corp won Silver; Dhiraj Singh of Diligent Media Corporation Ltd won Bronze.

In Feature Photography category, Gold was bagged by Bob Lee Keng Siang – My Paper, Singapore Press Holdings Ltd, Silver by Alan Lim – The Straits Times, Singapore Press Holdings Ltd; and Bronze by Ricky Chung South China Morning Post Publishers Ltd.

In Sports Photography category, Gold was bagged by Kent Blechynden, The Dominion Post; Silver by Satish Bate, HT Media Ltd; and Bronze by Dustin Shum, South China Morning Post Publishers Ltd.

In Best Newspaper Photographer category, Kent Blechynden, The Dominion Post won Gold; Phil Reid, The Dominion Post won Silver; Ho Chang Teng, Apple Daily Publication Development Ltd Taiwan won Bronze; and Judges’ Special Recognition award was bagged by Ritesh Uttamchandani, HT Media Ltd.
