Innovative roller coverings
for film dampening rollers

The advent of film dampening systems in offset printing represented a huge leap forwards in terms of print quality and productivity. Printers could now react more quickly than before to control the printing process and it was much easier to maintain a stable ink-water-balance, even at high press speeds. In film dampening systems, the dampening film is formed by the dosing and spreading activity of the rollers. The specific positioning of each roller in the dampening train, combined with the properties of the roller coverings in the individual positions, are the main factors in determining the quality and consistency of the dampening film and – with that – print quality. The formation of an even film can also be supported by the addition of isopropyl alcohol (IPA) to the fountain solution.

Flexibility pays off, for sure!
The French Groupe Riccobono is investing in Ferag technology for a successful future. Its new printing centres, Midi Print, Ouest Print and Paris Offset Print, are so configured that an immediate response is possible to most surprising customer demands. It’s a strategy that’s set to pay off.

The change in format for La Tribune was one such surprise. The new press had already been installed – configured for the classic large format. The new owners of this traditional financial newspaper soon decided on a future in Berliner format – a move that the Riccobono Group responded to quickly. Growth has been steady at Riccobono, not least because planning anticipates future customer wishes. The format of La Tribune is reduced efficiently and online in the Ferag SNT-U trimming drum, which meant that a job with a daily circulation of 100,000 copies could be retained. Such flexibility pays off for other production jobs as well: at Ouest Print in Bournezeau, western France, changes of format are also accomplished quickly, flexibly and economically, with Ferag’s SNT-U trimming drum enabling a new format for the Direct Soir freesheet.

ollers related common
problems and suggested solutions

- by Vaibhav Agarwal, director, Modinagar Rolls Ltd
Scum: This is the appearance of unwanted inked areas in the non-image areas, one of the important reasons being – inadequate supply of water to the plate. To prevent this, ensure that the damping rollers should be soft (22/25 SH) and resilient. They should apply a very thin even film of moisture on non-image areas. The fear of scum makes machines run at lower speed – loosing on invaluable production hours.
