of SUNDAY newspapers
The beauty and utility of a newspaper in our lives cannot be undermined. It is that morning drug which kicks us going, right in the morning…everyday…without fail. The smell of the newspaper and the steaming cup of tea or coffee – that’s the ultimate beginning of a new day! Despite the digital revolution, newspapers still rule the roost in our homes, reading rooms/libraries, etc. We all look forward to our daily dose of news and views with it. On top of this, if there is a Sunday which brings us a plenty of time to spare with multiple cup of tea/coffee, gives us the opportunity to look for much more than just the news in the newspapers.

While most of us get little time everyday to browse through this wonder paper, Sunday gives us more time to be together, says Gautam living within a joint family in Noida. No wonder than that the Sunday newspaper is bulkier and seems to have something for everyone. The Sunday edition of newspapers is made special – with interesting and useful, colourful and with varied contents. Reading material in Sunday newspapers’ supplements include the topics on films, food, science & technology, sports, life style, relationship, and what not. These supplements infact serve the very purpose of magazines to the greater extent and magazine publishers do feel a little punch in this regard. For the study purpose, we have gathered around 50 editions of various newspapers available in Delhi on a given Sunday which included not just the English and Hindi dailies, but more of the regional languages ones.
It is interesting to note that the cheapest newspaper comes for Rs 2 which is a regional language newspaper while price of business newspapers goes high to Rs 10 such as The Economic Times being sold at Rs 10, Business Standard at Rs 7 and Financial Express Rs 8. The Economic Times comes as a tabloid on Sundays with altogether newer/different content which one can probably spend half a day to read and enjoy. Most of the newspapers are available as broadsheet only, though supplements in tabloid form are offered with many including Urdu dailies such as Akhbar-E-Mashriq and Daily Pratap. The price tag goes Rs 5 for some regional or national newspapers such as Hindustan Times, The Hindu, etc. The Sunday Guardian, launched in January 2010, is available for Rs 3.
It was also observed that English dailies are produced in all-colour-page model while regional newspapers mostly have 4-8 pages in colour and rest in B/W, though supplements in most of the newspapers are produced in colour. The reason behind is obvious, as the ‘ad-support’ from advertisers come in plenty to all colour pages more than the B/W. The average number of pages being 16-24 for the main newspaper with supplements going to as high as 76. Like Hindustan Times and The Times of India on Sundays offer a bunch of pages to read, ranging from 64 to 100 including supplements. Besides looking at the mast-heads, some of the newspapers reveal multiple editions published serving different cities, and such number going as high as 63 (Dainik Bhaskar/Divya Bhaskar covering 13 states in four languages).
The cover price of the newspapers make it affordable for all and these are not waste even after reading – it can be given away to raddiwala for a price, which makes the newspapers almost free to a reader.
