Fourth Digital Media Asia
concludes spotlighting innovations

India bags five awards in the
third edition of WAN-IFRA’s Asian Digital Media Awards

Showcasing how cutting edge media organisations are currently using the most advanced digital media platforms for syndicating and monetizing newspapers, magazines, video or books contents, the Digital Media Asia 2012 explored the latest trends in social media, content monetization, mobile and tablet publishing. Presented during the event, India bagged five awards in third edition of WAN-IFRA’s Asian Digital Media Awards, in which The Indian Express won gold award in ‘Best in social media’ category, and Malayala Manorama Company’s project ‘Manorama Mobile’ received bronze award in ‘Best in mobile media’ category, while NDTV succeeded to bring in three awards including gold, silver and bronze in different categories.

With gathering of 351 participants from 32 countries, representing over 150 media companies and suppliers to the news publishing industry, WAN-IFRA’s fourth Digital Media Asia conference recently concluded in Kuala Lumpur. After the pre conference workshop, the three days conference (Nov 27-29) focused on: online & social media, smart media - digital business innovations, and tablet & mobile publishing.

Recognizing the best…

The conferences, expo and workshops, organised by the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA), also included the third edition of WAN-IFRA’s Asian Digital Media Awards. The awards, which have become the most prestigious recognition of outstanding work in the fields of online media, cross-media, online video, infographics, mobile, tablets and social media, for media houses in Asia, the Pacific and the Middle East, were presented to nearly fifty companies, publications and individuals. Singapore Press Holdings, Kompas, NDTV, South China Morning Post, Star Publications and Al Bayan were among the winners of the awards. “The Asian Digital Media Awards once again confirms that the region is a laboratory for innovation for digital news media,” said Thomas Jacob, chief operating officer of WAN-IFRA and Managing Director of WAN-IFRA Asia Pacific. “The winning projects demonstrate the many ways in which publishers are seizing the opportunities and responding to the changes in how people consume news and information.” The Best in Online Media and Cross-Media Awards were sponsored by Atex, while the Best in Online Video and Infographics awards were sponsored by Adobe.

North Africa meets
Southeast Asia…

During WAN-IFRA’s Digital Media Asia conference, media executives from Cambodia, Egypt, Libya, Myanmar and Vietnam got together for the WAN-IFRA Media Professionals Programme year-end event in Kuala Lumpur for sessions on leadership and management, how to develop a solid media business and women in leadership. The Media Professionals Programme, which launched earlier this year with two parallel programmes in South East Asia and the Middle East & North Africa, aims to contribute to the growth of strong local media enterprises in developing markets. The participants from the two programmes met in Kuala Lumpur to exchange their experiences and discuss common issues in their respective media markets.

“It was fascinating to see how many issues the participants from the two regions have in common, both in their daily work and in a larger media context,” said Kajsa Törnroth, strategic advisor for WAN-IFRA. “They all face challenges, and meeting and exchanging with peers gave them the opportunity to get hands-on advice from each other and realise that they are not alone in their efforts to develop independent high-quality media in politically and economically volatile markets.”

The Media Professionals Programmes provides mid-level media professionals from the commercial and editorial side of newspapers and online media with personalised, high-impact leadership development opportunities. It equips them with sustainable strategies, skills and support networks to advance their careers and contribute to the growth of financially viable and editorially strong media enterprises in the region. “The sessions we had throughout the programme were critical as they allowed me to disengage from my daily routine and put emphasis on areas that I normally don't have time to consider,” said Fatemah Farag, director of Welad Elbalad Media Services Ltd in Egypt, one of the participants. “Getting input from other people who are doing similar things gives you additional context and makes it a richer experience. “Furthermore, attending WAN-IFRA events and learning about the international setting of the business is something we never get exposed to, which is mind-blowing. To get that exposure to international trends and the movers and shakers gives a lot of new ideas, and has also been a great networking opportunity,” she said.
