NSTP in Malaysia
adopts Protecmedia’s
SHIPO
for all its publications
Malaysian publishing group New Straits Times Press
(NSTP) has positioned itself at the forefront of
managing distribution of its publications following the
adoption of Protecmedia’s application SHIPO. An advanced
solution for media business, SHIPO is developed to manage
all distribution aspects, covering circulation, subscriptions,
finance and administration of newspaper production houses.
This solution helps NSTP now operate in a fully integrated
way, achieving significant time savings and, above all,
analysis in depth in real time of all operations and process.
Moreover, SHIPO provides huge functional advantages for
logistics management, configuration of business model and data mining in real time for
business intelligence—these are what NSTP has garnered. NSTP produces popular newspapers,
namely, New Straits Times, New Sunday Times, Berita Harian, Ahad Berita Harian, Harian
Metro and Metro Ahad.
The publishing house
has also got integrated
its mailroom system
in the printing plant
within the logis t ics
process of circulation to
optimise the final number
of copies for t h e i r
distribution on different
routes. Distribution of
the newspapers all over
Malaysia is managed
in each delegation in
a decentralised way,
using SHIPO. At the
same time, subscriptions are managed through the same routes of distribution.
Different players involved in these processes (salesmen for distribution, agents, direct
clients, transport contractors, etc.) have been integrated into a well-defined business model,
which facilitates to NSTP to evaluate the importance and relevance of each one. Similarly,
through data integration and business intelligence tools offered by Protecmedia, NSTP
can segment in practice by any criteria (type customer, geographic area, delegation, etc.)
and obtain reports in real time that are important for managing business. The project was
implemented and launched by Richmatt Graphics, Protecmedia official partner in Southeast
Asia. In India, Protecmedia is partnered with NEWSTECH.

First transgender
comic character
‘Dhee’
launched in
Bangladesh
Boys of Bangladesh (BoB), a support
organisation for transgender community
in the country, has recently launched
the first ever lesbian comic character ‘Dhee’.
The character is developed as an advocacy
tool for a broader project called Project
Dhee, which aims at taking forward the
movement to establish and preserve rights
of the LGBT community in Bangladesh.
BoB says there is a reason they chose to
share the story through a female character:
the LGBT movement has so far been maledominated,
and they wanted to bring a
change in that.
Dhee, literally meaning wisdom, is revolved
in stories being told in comic strips that are
portrayed flashcards; it will be used to conduct
campaigns to spread information about gender
and sexuality across 15 countries. Launch of
the comic stripes at British Council in Dhaka
was attended by a horde of social activists
and common people. In Bangladesh, many
transgender people are forced to hide their
sexual identity and live double lives for
fear of reprisals in the deeply conservative
country. But the ‘Dhee’ movement has revealed
increasingly assertive of their rights.

ABB to replace obsolete
press controls at SAPESO
Being a leader in providing
automation solutions for
the newspaper industry,
ABB has received a new
order from SAPESO (Société
Anonyme de Presse et d’Editions
Sud-Ouest) based in Bordeaux,
France, for a modular retrofit
on their three COLORMAN
presses from manroland web
systems. Like many printing
firms, SAPESO was concerned
about the long term availability
of their printing capacity as their
existing control systems were
already obsolete. To solve this
problem they turned to ABB to
replace the existing controls with
modern systems based on ABB’s
Advant Controller AC500, a
system that is used in countless demanding
industries and for which spare parts will be
available for at least the next ten years.
The scope of the order is divided into three
phases. First the unit controls on the six 4-hi
printing towers, two per press, will be replaced.
The second phase sees the replacement of the
controls on the three folders, and finally, in
the third phase, the control systems on six
reelstands will be replaced. When upgrading
the control systems on the towers and folders
ABB will also replace the obsolete and
proprietary Interbus Loop devices with standard
components. The list of devices to be replaced
includes the LBA Interbus Loop master units,
originally manufactured by manroland, web
break detectors, ink level sensors, interfaces
to the Festo valves and positional encoders.
The commissioning of the first phase of the
project, the retrofitting of the six printing
towers, will begin in November this year. And
the retrofits of the folders and reelstands will
then follow in two subsequent phases in the
course of 2016 and 2017.
