With its drupa ’08 theme -
‘New Ways for Print’ -
Goss was demonstrating
innovative technologies and an
expanded application range for web
offset production from its stand in
hall 17. Showcasing its latest press,
finishing and workflow solutions,
they were presenting technologies
that push the boundaries of web
offset production and enhance the
value of print. As well as exhibiting
Magnum 4, Uniliner, FPS and
Sunday 4000 printing units – all with
new features and capabilities – the
company was highlighting the
world’s first 96-page Sunday 5000
web press. Magnapak and
Pacesetter finishing systems were
also exhibited. “Goss International
is focused on continually improving
the value proposition of print and
providing printers and publishers
with competitive advantages and
new opportunities. Our organization
has premiered many groundbreaking
technologies at drupa over the
years, and this year is no different,”
pointed out Bob Brown, CEO, Goss

The new Sunday 5000 model -
world’s first 96-page web press
features the automatic plate
changing, AT technology, digital
presetting and closed-loop controls
allowing fast makereadies with very
low waste. All of the elements of
this world’s first 2860 mm-wide web
press– from 1524 mm (60”) diameter
paper rolls, to consumables, to
folding precision at full web speeds
have been designed for optimal
high-pagination production and
new opportunities.
According to Jacques Navarre, vice
president of sales for Goss
International in Europe, “The
success of the Sunday 4000 press
and the opportunities created by
the wider Sunday 5000 press are
linked closely to gapless blanket
technology and a continuous
stream of supporting innovations.
These include Autoplate and
Automatic Transfer (AT) options,
as well as the Contiweb FD paster,
Ecocool dryer and Goss digital
workflow tools for automated
operation.” Mazzucchelli, which
already operates 48- and 64-page
Sunday 4000 presses, will install the
first 96-page Sunday 5000 system
with a web width of 2860 mm (112
inches) in Italy. “This investment
is about us taking the initiative and
defining the market. The Sunday
5000 system will break the
rules, providing us immense
possibilities,” explained Pierluigi
Guerini, director at Mazzucchelli.
The latest range of design
enhancements to the 4-12 page
Universal and 8-24 page Uniliner
press models was also showcased.
New features available for Uniliner
and Universal presses include semiautomatic
plate changing,
automatic web-width changing,
enhanced dampener control and
T90 configuration options for more
compact and user-friendly press
lines. In addition, Sinapse
interactive training simulators are
available as an option, enabling
crews to quickly learn to operate
the presses at maximum efficiency.
Originally designed for application
to Universal and Uniliner press
models, the Goss DigiRail digital
inker is a key contributor towards
their flexibility, enhancing inker
accuracy and consistency by
feeding a stream of digitally
measured ink pulses onto the ink
rail. Having a fully enclosed
manifold with a small volume, it not
only eliminates ink contamination
but also provides fast switching
between coldset and heatset inks.
Single-width Goss Universal
presses are available in single
circumference (one-page around)
configurations, as well as double
circumference (two-pages around)
configurations that print at up to
80,000 copies per hour. Single- and
double-circumference Uniliner
models are available in web widths
up to 1900 mm (74.8 inches) in triplewide
format (six pages across).
