Goa to host 16th IFRA India Conference


IFRA India 2008, the sixteenth annual conference of IFRA in India will be held at the Marriott Resort Goa from September 17-18 and this is for the first time that this event is being held in the beach city.

The conference will start with a session on ‘Newspaper of the Future,’ looking at changes in newspaper production technology, exploring case studies and trying to determine how the newspaper will shape-up in future. Topics such as semi-commercial printing, digital printing, and printing using lower grammage newsprint will be discussed. Other sessions will be on ‘Materials & Mailroom’ and ‘Technology to Use and Best Practices’. Confirmed eminent speakers from India and overseas include: Sandeep Gupta, executive president, Dainik Jagran; Sanat Hazra, technical director, The Times of India group; Sanjib Hazra, AGM quality, HT Media Ltd; Dean Du Toit, senior production manager, Gulf News; Yusuke Naito, Nikkei, Japan; and Ian Lewis, director, Arcon Digital, New Zealand. Also, there will be two preconference workshops on September 16, focusing on ‘Reorganising multimedia newsroom and editorial systems’.

These workshops will be led by the IFRA Newsplex team, targeting editors, sub-editors, online editors, IT directors, newsroom executives, new media executives, management executives, newsroom management teams and leading newsrooms or multimedia/convergence projects in the editorial department. The workshops will look into the basic concepts of a multimedia organisation with examples and also try to understand the phases of change of editorial reorganisation and principles for guiding newsroom transformation. Eminent speakers include: Prof Dipak Jain of HT Media – the dean of the Kellogg School of Management since July 2001; Tomas Brunegard, CEO, Stampen Group, Sweden; Dr Horst Pirker, chairman, Styria Medien Group, Austria, and president of the Board of IFRA; Steve Yelvington, senior strategist of Morris Digitalworks, USA; and Tomasz Jozefacki, head of internet division of Agora, Poland.

At the workshop on Editorial systems, vendors like 4CPlus, Adobe, Comyan, Quark, Summit and Televisual will present their products. This workshop is targeted at editors, sub-editors, online editors, IT directors, systems managers, production managers, newsroom executives, new media executives, designers, page layout artists and executives from archives & library. Delegates can make the most of the opportunities offered at this workshop, to focus on and compare the working of several systems in a highly productive environment. For the first time, the workshop will be conducted in a small-group format so that participants get enough time to understand each system in details.

There will also be a panel discussion featuring CEOs of India’s leading newspapers, chaired by Tariq Ansari, managing director, Mid Day. Hans-Peter Rohner, CEO, PubliGroupe SA, Switzerland, will give a special address at the Conclave dinner.
