McLaren Press Graphics
orders Q.I. Press Controls’ mRC-3D

Q.I. Press Controls North America management receives a key order from McLaren Press Graphics, one of the leading commercial printers based in Bracebridge, Ontario. The advanced, latest generation closed-loop mRC-3D full-colour register system with cut-off controls, will be installed at McLaren’s DGM430 coldset single-width press line. For McLaren Press Graphics, this investment replaces their existing register system, which did not include cut-off controls. Drew McLaren, president, McLaren Press Graphics said, “We were one of the first commercial printers to install registration controls on a non-heatset press back in the 1990s, and we recognised the ROI immediately.”

With Q.I. Press Controls’ mRC-3D, McLaren wanted to resolve their cut-off waste issues while taking advantage of the new camera technology to further enhance their quality process and improve their waste numbers. Drew McLaren mentioned that they didn’t realise how different the product was from other brands on the market. He added, “Q.I. Press Controls will allow us to close the loop on our press controls as our current system does not address the bottleneck of manual cut-off controls. We had been looking for a system that would address this weak link in our automation.” McLaren’s coldset production line is a DGM430 with a 89 cm web width and 57.8 cm cut-off.

CSQ goes for first IDS closed
loop from Q.I. Press Controls in Italy

Leading Italian newspaper printer Centro Stampa Quotidiani (CSQ) and Q.I. Press Controls will have their premiere in the Italian market. For the first time, a newspaper press in the country will be equipped with closed loop colour control: IDS on CSQ’ WIFAG OF373/6 newspaper press. The investment will be for 8 IDS scanners for closed loop colour including dampening control. “As we already were familiar with Q.I. Press Controls with the installation of their first generation colour register system (IRS) on our WIFAG OF370GTD press in 2005, we followed the developments on their IDS closed loop colour control as well,” said Dario de Cian, GM, CSQ. This closed loop colour control enables the press to reproduce colours accurately and consistently throughout the run. This will generate savings in labour and waste. “Given the good experiences with Q.I. Press Controls being our supplier during the past years, their continuous drive to deliver innovative, reliable solutions that comply to customer needs and their good customer service made us decide to invest in their IDS closed loop colour.” One of the added features which especially impressed CSQ was dampening control.

UK press freedom report published
WAN-IFRA recently released the results from a fact-finding delegation of international editors sent to the United Kingdom between January 15 and 16, 2014. Vincent Peyrègne, CEO, WAN-IFRA said that the lack of any real guarantees enshrining press freedom continues to expose journalism in the UK to great uncertainty, as there is nothing benign in a system that invites even the possibility of tighter restrictions on freedom of expression. The WAN-IFRA delegation met government representatives, industry professionals, academics, lawyers and civil society organisations and heard a range of opinions regarding proposed changes to the system of self-regulation and the acrimonious process surrounding the drawing up of the Royal Charter. The press freedom report reiterates serious industry concerns regarding the reforms, while revealing cautious optimism from those who believe current proposals to be an opportunity to restore public trust following Lord Justice Leveson’s Inquiry into press standards. The report findings also call for the British government to reiterate clearly to the international community that it continues to support a free and independent press.

The full report can be downloaded at http://www.wan-ifra.org/node/101035/

Two printing majors get control
consol from manroland web systems

Bruehlsche Universitaetsdruckerei at Giessen in Germany and Severotisk at Usti in Czech Republic recently received latest control console technology from manroland web systems which developed the integrated solutions for retrofits, custom-made for older printing presses. The solutions are designed to reduce downtimes and cancellation expenses and increase performance of printing system at the same time. Lithoman, Rotoman and Polyman, equipped with HP 1000 controls, are supposed to be exchanged completely. The latest generation of control console servers can be integrated to the older control consoles without any problems.

Hans-Joachim Stephan, head of production at Bruehlsche Universitaetsdruckerei in Giessen said that they are impressed by the latest technology, especially when it comes to operation at the control console, they can realise the quantum leap in development. “Our team of staffs is stoked by the central control functions. The reduced waste rates are the major benefits, assured by the possibility of pre-inking with a PECOM Press Manager, which has not been available before. This cost reduction, in principle, makes the retrofit pay for itself,” he added. A retrofit of the control system of manroland web systems enables a significantly better performance with higher product quality and less interruptions in production run.

New range of eco-consumables from Heidelberg
Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) has been offering a range of particularly eco-friendly consumables – the Saphira Eco product line – since 2011. This range is subject to the strictest criteria in the print media industry for the environmental compatibility of consumables. Heidelberg has now tightened these criteria once again and adapted them to the latest international environmental standards. It is also further expanding the range of Saphira Eco products it offers.

Users can now benefit from the Saphira Blanket Pro 200, an eco-friendly blanket that has excellent all-round properties and is particularly suitable for commercial printers looking to make their production operations even more environmentally friendly and sustainable. Working closely with suppliers, Heidelberg has defined and introduced the world’s first criteria for environmentally friendly blankets. To define these criteria, the company reviewed the production process and identified and evaluated the green credentials of the substances used.

Heidelberg is also launching the mineral oil-free Saphira Ink Anicolor S100 and H100 ink series for Anicolor technology, thus making Anicolor, which boasts minimal waste and low energy consumption, even more eco-friendly. In the postpress sector, users will be able to use Saphira Binding Glue PUR 330 NE, the first PUR glue not to release any harmful isocyanates and therefore any substances that pose a health risk to users.

“Green printing has already become standard at numerous companies in industrialized markets. Hamillroad Software, one of the leadings RIP and screening innovators, announces that through Polkadots (its official reseller for Canada), the company has successfully sold and installed Auraia into new newspaper printers in Canada. Customers are seeing significant improvements in print quality, along with noticeable decreases in monthly ink and paper costs that produce an incredibly short ROI of between 6-12 months. Star Press, located in Wainwright, Alberta recently started feeding their existing Kodak Trendsetters digitally modulated screening (DMS) with the aim of increasing their print quality.

Following extensive tests of FM (HDS) and DM (Auraia) on their Kodak Trendsetters, Vancouver-based Times Colonist chose the latest in DM screening technology as it produced the highest quality on press. Kurt Kudor, production manager, Times Colonist said, “Like many newspaper publishers we strive to improve the value of our product to our readership and advertisers while reducing production costs. To that end we did a test of Auraia II DM screening in one low risk newspaper section in December of 2013 - just ahead of all the upcoming Christmas advertising. The test lasted just one day. The results were so impressive that we completely switched the entire paper over to Auraia and haven’t looked back”.
