Hunkeler brings newer
solutions for NEWSPAPERS
In a pioneering response to current newspaper industry challenges,
such as decreased circulation, reduced advertising volume,
greater competition, and a need for increasingly timely news coverage,
Hunkeler Innovationdays focused on the digital solution for newspapers as well.
|
From February 23 to
26, 2015, the Hunkeler
Innovationdays was
held for the 11th time at the
Messe Lucerne exhibition
facility. With each successive
Innovationdays, the event
has enhanced its international
reputation. Despite this growth,
the Hunkeler Innovationdays
has retained its compact
scope, so the event provides
a deep and complete industry
overview. The event is focused
on integrated total solutions
and practical applications, so
visitors become acquainted
with the latest developments
in all areas of production
and finishing processes for
digitally manufactured printed
products. Innovationdays is a
unique platform for presenting
real world, high-performance
digital printing solutions for
transactional printing, direct
mail, and the commercial
printing of books, brochures,
and newspapers in a relaxed
and comfortable setting.
The show featured digital
newspaper finishing with a new
folder and collecting module
for enhanced efficiency when
producing tabloid and broadsheet
formats - also perfectly suited
for producing inserts. Center
stage to the solution was the
drum collating module DC7.
This module collates the duplex
printed sheets of variable size.
The papers leave the collating
module as an electrostatic fixed
stack.
UW6 / UW7 Unwind module:
The new generation unwinder
is specifically designed for
a flexible, high-performance
environment. Ease of use, enabled
by the automatic dancer control
system, and user guide with touch
panel reduce setup times to a
minimum. Rolls with diameters
of up to 1370 mm loaded semiautomatically.
A triple dancer
guarantees optimum acceleration
of the web, and provides for the
processing of a wide range of
paper weights. The dancer weight
can be decoupled completely
by the loop control to allow
for tension free feed into highperformance
digital printers and
cutters.
CS6 / CS7 Cross and length
cutter: The rotary cross cutter
consistently produces clean,
accurate cuts at exact angles,
ensuring the highest levels of
productivity and quality of output.
In combination with the register
control software, it also provides
the precision essential to the
finishing process. Setups as
well as adjustments are easily
performed at the display panel.
An integrated diverter separates
waste from the production output.
Newspaper broadsheet Solution: The innovative concept
underlying this technology allows a geographically independent
production of up-to-date newspapers, digitally printed in the well
established broadsheet format. The drum DC7 collates the duplex
printed sheets of variable size. The papers leave the collating
module as an electro-statically-fixed stack into the Buckle folder.
Newspaper Tabloid Solution: The modular Hunkeler tabloid
solution for the production of variable on demand newspapers
and booklets offline or inline with continuous feed digital
printing systems, line gluing option for collated tabloid
newspapers and booklets. This technology is revolutionary in
that it offers an entirely novel approach to newspaper and
booklet production.
Newspaper Combi-Solution: Newspaper line for broadsheet
and tabloid products has configuration for quickly shifting from
broadsheet to tabloid with the appropriate folding processes.
Dynamic glue applications in the drum collator DC7 enables
versatile production options such as spine gluing of tabloid
newspapers and job printing in magazine format or producing
tabloid products with several spine-glued and nested sections.

DC7 Drum collator module:
Within the drum collator,
sheets processed by the cutting
module are collated on a rotary
drum. This innovative patent
approach to sheet assembly works
continuously, without printer stop
regardless of the number of sheets
to be collated. The unique rotary
aspect of the module’s design
results in precise and gentle
handling of the product. Essential
processing data regarding format,
sections, and diversion of waste
sheets is transferred directly from
the cutting module. Set-up and
adjustments are easily performed
at the touch screen display panel.

As an industry first, this solution
offers publishers the opportunity
to produce as few or as many
newspapers, with as few or as
many pages as locally pertinent,
anywhere in the world. From
any location, editors can modify,
fine-tune, and revise data to make
it completely relevant to specific
markets before transmitting
it via internet to the printing
location. In addition, content
is edited and advertising added
promptly, even during the printing
process, thanks to the digital
print system’s dynamic layout
capabilities. This technology is
revolutionary in that it offers
an entirely novel approach to
newspaper production. During
off-peak hours the system can
be used, for the production
of brochures, book signatures
or mailings.
