Young ones among winners

Asian Media Awards 2016, presented on the sidelines of the conference, identified a horde of winners that predominantly consisted of a number of young news media companies in the region. Organised at Fort Santiago, a 16th century Spanish monument in Philippines, some winners were excellent enough to win multiple accolades. Muscat Press (Oman) and Gulf News (Dubai) bagged several awards, joining the ranks of regulars like Singapore Press Holdings (Singapore), New Straits Times (Malaysia) and South China Morning Post (China). The young and first time winners at the awards evening were rejoiced to the fullest! Among them were The Star (Malaysia) and Jawa Pos (Indonesia), Myanmar Times (Myanmar), The Dawn and Jang (Pakistan) and Kaya Media (South Korea).

The awards were designed in recognition of excellence in print quality, design, infographics, photography, editorial content, newspaper marketing and community service, out of 462 entries from 19 countries. A panel of 20 judges who finally scrutinised the winners comprised Bill Frakes and Ian Grarup, winners of World Press Photo Awards; Juan Velasco, art director, National Geographic; Doug Wills, managing editor, Evening Standard and Andrew Holden, former chief editor of The Age.
