Druckzentrum Südwest orders
ABB retrofit for its Wifag reel stands

ABB announces further success for its retrofit solution for Wifag reel stands as Druckzentrum Südwest GmbH based in Villingen-Schwenningen in Southwestern Germany, which prints popular newspapers like Schwarzwälder Bote, has selected ABB to replace the obsolete WCON controls and drives on six of its reel stands. The scope of the order also includes new drives for all draw rollers in the turner bar decks of the Wifag OF370 press as well as upgrades to the existing ABB Press Master system. The new reel stand controls use ABB’s PLC system AC500, which is used in countless demanding industries worldwide. Two major advantages of this for the end users are, apart from the technical qualities, the long-term availability of spare parts and the fact that these spare parts can be bought not only from ABB but also numerous independent suppliers around the world.

The existing drives will be replaced with new ABB ACSM1 drives. These high performance machinery drives provide speed, torque and motion control for demanding applications. They can control induction, synchronous and asynchronous servo and high torque motors with various feedback devices. The new drives will be built into the existing cabinets. Uwe Braasch, technical director, Druckzentrum Südwest, remarks, “As technical director it is one of my jobs to ensure the long-term availability of our press. With the new ABB drives and reel stand controls we are not only modernising our systems but also ensuring the long-term availability of spare parts”. The commissioning of the new controls and drives will be completed this year.

ppi Media puts on its
second annual ‘ShipIt Day’

Small – Sharp – Smart! This was the motto that guided the second annual ShipIt Day at ppi Media in Kiel, Germany. More precisely, this means transforming project ideas into product realities within 24 hours. 50 participants working in ten teams accepted the challenge. Jan Kasten, project advocate and MD at ppi Media said, “What we got were products that are now ready for a market launch.” Manual Scheyda, senior vicepresident of product & innovation management at ppi Media commented that the concept of ShipIt Day is highly incentivizing. “The participants are highly motivated, not just because of the time pressure but, above all, because they have the opportunity to make ideas they are passionate about come alive,” he noticed.

When the event was premiered in 2014, only ppi employees participated, but this year ShipIt Day was open for any one of entire concern. GOSS Magnum Compact press
enters final phase of testing

With the press towers clearing the overhead by no more than an inch, the first Magnum Compact press system in the United States has been installed snugly and initial tests on its six 2x1 units completed. The press is currently undergoing commissioning tests and shadow production before moving into full production. The new press for Advance Publishing of Staten Island in the US complements the company’s existing double-width press line and offers backup to the production of the daily Staten Island Advance while adding capacity for other contract newspaper, insert and commercial work.

Even at just 2.2 m tall, installation of the Magnum Compact towers was a high-precision operation. In what is possibly a unique configuration, web slots were cut into the ceiling to accommodate turner bars for delivering the web to a folder on the floor above. Among the Magnum Compact features attractive to Staten Island Advance was the GOSS Autoplate technology that delivers fast makereadies and enables successive jobs to be run with complete plate changes within two minutes. Magnum Compact design enables the newspaper to offer a wide range of products competitively and with good margins. The ability to print cost-effective runs as short as 500 - 1,000 copies provides printers not only with an alternative to digital print, but an economical way of handling runs up to 250,000 copies, giving unparalleled production flexibility and a powerful competitive advantage.

Denmark makes acquaintance with
Q.I. Press Controls and EAE combination

It seems the collaboration between Q.I. Press Controls and EAE is paying dividends as in a span of just one year of their continued developments of groundbreaking automation products the industry has become increasingly aware of the fact that the two companies are operating as a single entity. Joint orders are starting to pour in and Denmark too, is making acquaintance with the QIPC – EAE combination.

Having been won over by the commitment shown by both organisations, the Trykkeriet Nordvestsjaelland printing plant has singled out QIPC – EAE for the upgrade of its presses. Trykkeriet Nordvestsjaelland, based in Holbaek, Denmark, forms part of Sjaellandske Media. This local business, with a workforce of around 500, publishes four daily and 34 weekly newspapers, the latter alone with a circulation of 7,85,000.

Despite ageing systems being the IRS cameras from Q.I. Press Controls and PrintPP software from EAE respectively, Trykkeriet Nordvestsjaelland decided to carry out an extensive investigation among several potential suppliers. The order consists of software and hardware upgrade for the EAE PrintPP and replacement of the IRS system by 4 mRC-3D cameras with AIMS for cut-off control and 8 IDS-3D cameras with AIMS for colour register. The upgrade is intended for a KBA Comet with 4 full-colour towers and one folder. The IDS-3D cameras have been made suitable for colour control, which will help Trykkeriet Nordvestsjaelland invest in this at a later stage.

Grupo El Comercio to install GOSS Community
Further enhancing distribution and circulation of its newspapers and others they produce, Grupo El Comercio in Peru has invested in a third GOSS Community, which is being ordered with four four-high towers, four zero-speed splicers and a SSC folder. It will be installed in a new, purpose-built facility of the company in Arequipa, designed to match existing satellite sites in Chiclayo and Huancayo. Part of an ongoing strategic expansion plan, prior to opening plants in Chiclayo and Huancayo, El Comercio previously distributed all newspapers from Lima, covering 800 miles of territory. Giving the reason of expansion, Ignacio Prado, director, El Comercio says, “Distribution was becoming challenging with some products arriving late due to distance.”

Since 2007, Grupo El Comercio has opened two new facilities and, soon, the third with the new GOSS Community will improve market share of the company in the region. El Comercio has a longstanding partnership with GOSS, working together for over the last 15 years. “We have been using GOSS technology since the adoption of our first GOSS Newsliner way back in 1997. The first press is still running well, which is testament to its design and build quality. Since then, we have been very satisfied with the performance of GOSS Community,” remarks Ignacio Prado adding that they have also worked successfully with GOSS on major projects including a waste reduction programme and colour capacity upgrade.

Malaysian newspaper publisher
Utusan Melayu successfully e-upgraded

Two particular things connect Utusan Melayu to manroland web systems—first, a long-term partnership and an excellent technical performance. Utusan Melayu is one of the leading newspaper publishers in Malaysia and on a great partnership with manroland web systems that lasts for many years now. In Bangi, close to Kuala Lumpur, the printer produces its newspapers on three GEOMAN presses that have been installed between 1997 and 2007. All presses have been upgraded with different extensions over the last few years.

At another printing site in Penang, Utusan Melayu uses UNISET press from manroland web systems to churn its newspapers. For meeting the changing market requirements and for enabling a faster, more flexible and more economical production, the publishers invested in an e-upgrade that had been finished in the first quarter of 2015. The upgrade contains a modernisation of the entire control desk technology and essential components of the drive systems of two GEOMAN presses at the printing site.

Following the upgrade, Utusan Melayu now has the most modern technology available in the market. Therewith the printer has a significant competitive advantage. During the first project step, the entire control desk technology has been replaced by the newest PECOM hard and software. PECOM, formerly known as printnetwork, organises the entire integration and automation supply from manroland web systems into five well-arranged workflow steps that reach from evaluation via integration and operation to the production process and its control.

Adobe, Kodak and Quark integrate
more technologies from callas software

Newly released Acrobat DC software from Abode includes even more technology from the German company callas software GmbH. Users mainly profit from this in prepress and document preparation. This new version allows Acrobat users to use variables in their preflight profiles, permitting dynamic preflight checks. This increases flexibility and reduces the total number of profiles that needs to be maintained. Users can, for example, create a dynamic preflight profile to down-sample images or check the document’s page size. When this profile is executed on a PDF document, the user is asked to provide the desired image resolution or the intended page size. Also important for pre-printing is the new ability to create bleed for objects that are placed too close to the edge of the page; to avoid cutting problems. Integrating cutting-edge callas technology means that Acrobat DC can now also process larger files much faster. This is particularly useful for variable data printing.

On the other side of development, Kodak integrates callas software technology into its recently-released PRINERGY Workflow 7, which lets users set up and monitor PDF print data processes and workflows. The pdfToolbox profiles expand the software’s existing validation and correction features to allow improved quality control and less manual work for users. PRINERGY Workflow provides intelligent preprinting management tools for job and package printing. The software automates associated print production processes, thereby increasing efficiency and reducing both manual work and financial costs. PRINERGY Workflow 7, the new version of the software, further automates all essential printing functions, with pdfToolbox providing a reliable PDF foundation: an essential component during quality control and preparation. Quark is yet another player in the league using callas software as its newly introduced QuarkXPress 2015 has been improved for better, faster, cutting-edge PDF output. This is because this professional-grade software for layout and graphic design now supports document output in PDF/X-4 format, verified by callas pdfToolbox.

This means that PDF/X-4 files exported from QuarkXPress 2015 will be certified with the same technology used in Adobe Acrobat. PDF/X-4 offering features such as unflattened transparency, media-independent colours, and layering. This means it is no longer necessary to reduce transparent sections as early in the process as the point of PDF creation. Radhika Systems based in New Delhi are representing callas software in India.
