Printers protest paper price hike
Not willing to accept frequent price rise of cardboard, kraft and other kinds of papers, members of Offset Printers’ Association (OPA) in Ludhiana unanimously went on a one-day strike recently to protest undue and unnecessary increase in the prices of papers and paper boards. Speaking during the protest, Parveen Aggarwal, president, OPA, appealed, “During the past 2-3 months, there have been constant increases in prices of papers: kraft paper, which was available at Rs 25-26/kg, has increased to Rs 30/kg; and there has been increase of Rs 2/kg in the (price of) cardboards as well. It is not practical to withstand this undue increase.” “In such situation, our business is also suffering due to slump in the market, such as steep paper price hike,” he asserted. Kamal Chopra, general secretary, OPA, quoted the Essential Commodities Act 1955 in which all kinds of paper are declared as essential commodity. “By this logic it is the duty of the government to check undue increase in the prices of papers and paperboards,” he pointed out, adding that the one-day strike could be further extended indefinitely if their grievances are not addressed, which included relaxation of import duty on papers, subsidy, protection from undue price hike.
