Goss press delivers its
potential for Chinese newspaper

With commissioning its new two-tower Goss Newsliner4x1 press, Tianjin Evening News Group has expressed ‘unreserved satisfaction’ at performance figures achieved since installation. Key to these findings is the new capability to produce two separate publications through one folder. Tianjin has been a long-term Goss newspaper press user, and the latest installation complements production off four 2x2 (single wide, double circumference) Goss Universal and three 2x1 Universalpresses.

In choosing the Newsliner press, Tianjin Evening News Group was looking for a high-specification press rated at up to 80,000 copies per hour that would enhance capacity and flexibility while achieving cost advantages. With a web width of up to 1562mm, the new double-width, single circumference Newsliner press is configured as two four-over-four towers. It has a Goss 2:3:3 jaw folder

featuring double independent folding couples and an upper former providing the crucial ability to simultaneously handle two individual titles with different circulations. This provides cost benefits through maximizing savings on consumables while boosting press utilization. The press is also equipped with ink registration and ink leveling systems.

As per Li Shengli, vice president of Tianjin Evening News Group, “Naturally, the advanced features and overall capabilities of the equipment are the first and foremost when making an investment of this magnitude and significance, but it certainly helps in the decision when you can trust your technology partner. Our experience with eight Goss presses over the years has been very positive. In addition to the competitive features of the equipment, it is the professionalism and reliable service of the whole team that has given us confidence in this new investment.”

Riding high on recent sales successes as well as positive market responses to its newest press models, Goss International will be re-asserting its leadership position in the newspaper sector at the IFRA Expo 2012 in Frankfurt, Germany (October 29-31). The company will extend its drupa theme in focusing directly on its innovative approach to today’s publishing challenges. Reiterating its drupa invitation to ‘See things differently’, they will emphasize how this corporate philosophy provides new solutions for greater productivity and opportunity.

“What a difference a year makes! The latest Goss press offering for the evolving high-volume market is the Goss Colorliner CPS compact press system. This press was launched at last year’s IFRA Expo, and the first installation is underway at DC Thomson in Dundee, Scotland. The Colorliner CPS system builds proven technologies into a compact configuration focused on end-user benefits such as higher quality print, low manning levels and reduced carbon footprint. Its units have a conventional non-split design, but a highly innovative cylinder and ink train configuration for the shortest possible nip-to-nip distance. This provides a web lead of only 2.7 meters (8.86 feet) between the first and fourth level, reducing web fan-out and increasing registration accuracy.

For the single-width market, the most recent addition to the Goss newspaper portfolio is the Magnum HPS press. This model, as exhibited at drupa 2012, has already been installed at two customer sites in China, chosen for its lower cost-per-page capability. Printing at speeds up to 70,000 copies per hour, the press draws on the strengths of the Goss portfolio of newspaper and semi-commercial presses to achieve high performance-to-cost ratio from a two-page across, single-around format. Vits portfolio integration:
a clear-cut success for Goss and its customers

Since taking the Vits Print portfolio under its wings, Goss International claims that the transition has been virtually seamless for customers and Goss operatives. The smooth integration into the Goss product range also means that orders for Vits equipment have continued to gather pace. Since the asset acquisition of Vits Print GmbH in December last year, Goss International has assimilated production of the Vits brand equipment into the manufacturing cycles at its plant in Boxmeer, The Netherlands, where Goss pasters and heatset dryers are manufactured. The crossover from the previous Vits facility in nearby Langenfeld, Germany, was phased in order to maintain manufacture and delivery schedules. Thirteen orders for Vits equipment have been taken or fulfilled during this period, with installations in Europe, Asia and the Americas.

“Without a doubt, the Vits technology enjoys a position of industry-leadership. We are currently supplying sheeters, pre-folders, coaters, perforators, die-cutters and an automated transport system for a range of customers in various sectors,” explains Rutger Jansen, director of sales and service for Goss International’s Contiweb auxiliary division. “The star product of the moment is probably the Rotocut sheeter in its various models. We are in the process of supplying seven of these, including one for a new Goss M-600 Folia press in Brazil.”

They feature technologies such as Vits floatation strip technology, which ensures a gentle web feed, as well as integrated register control and fully automated pallet transport for greater flexibility. Different models cater for specific market requirements, accommodating webs from 400 – 1700 mm and delivering 24-, 32- and 48-page signatures.

All auxiliary components from Goss International, including the Vits products, can be integrated within Goss press systems as well as press systems manufactured by other suppliers for web offset, gravure and flexography applications, including packaging and direct mail. According to Jansen, experience to date supports early expectations that the market-leading sheeting and specialized finishing components would be the ideal complement to the existing range of Goss web offset print production solutions. “In many cases we are installing Vits brand equipment alongside Goss dryers or reelstands, sometimes for operation inline with a Goss press but also on competitor presses.”
