South Tyrol newspaper to be
more attractive with manroland

Even better quality for the products of the Athesia Group: the company has ordered a manroland COLORMAN, XXL for its plant in Bolzano. From August 2012, the high-performance newspaper press will support and expand the production of this renowned media group in South Tyrol. Athesia already has a UNIMAN with dryer, an OCTOMAN, and several sheetfed presses.

The new COLORMAN will be mainly used to print the Dolomiten (“Dolomite Alps”), a daily newspaper with an average circulation of around 60,000 copies after 130 years.

It was founded in 1882 as “Der Tiroler” (“The Tyrolean”), ultra-modern printing technology will be introduced to produce this long-standing paper. With greater capacity and less paper waste, the COLORMAN provides higher production efficiency. The Berliner format press will initially be equipped with two reel splicers, two satellite printing towers, and one folder; and will be installed on one level to simplify operation. PPL (PowerPlateLoading) ensures fast plate changing, and an upgrade to an autoprint line with the fully-automated APL (AutomaticPlateLoading) system is possible. Furthermore, the COLORMAN can be extended with one more printing tower, one folder, and a dryer, to replace the UNIMAN. The UNIMAN is still running in three shifts at present and shall continue printing heatset jobs for the time being. “We have enjoyed a trustful business relationship with manroland for many years,” says Dr Michel Ebner, president of Athesia Druck, “Nevertheless, we intensively evaluated the alternatives before making our decision, but chose manroland once again. We were convinced of the economic advantages of the satellite concept.”

Chinese printer orders 11th Goss press
One of the leading suppliers of high-quality commercial and magazine printing in China, C&C Joint Printing Co has recently ordered its ninth Goss M-600 16-page web offset press and its eleventh new Goss web press since 1998. The investment is driven by growing demand in the Beijing area for the production quality and efficiencies that differentiate the multiple award-winning C&C service offering.

Rated at up to 61,000 impressions per hour, the new 16-page press with 598.5mm cut-off and 965mm web width will feature Goss Autoplate automatic plate changing and a JF55 plus folder with quarter fold capabilities and a 4- and 8-page module for added versatility. INS expresses grave apprehension
-on accepting the recommendations of the Majithia Wage Boards

Ashish Bagga, president, the Indian Newspaper Society (INS) has expressed grave apprehension that the decision of the Union Cabinet, Govt of India on the eve of Diwali to accept the recommendations of the Majithia Wage Boards may lead to the closure of a majority of small and medium newspaper publications across the country as the proposed wage hikes are very high and beyond the capacity of the industry. He cautioned that even large publications would find it difficult to implement these steep wage hikes. It is indeed unfortunate that the INS’ request for re-examination of the flawed and one-sided report has not been considered by the Government. A number of petitions challenging the Working Journalists, and other Newspaper Employees (Conditions of Service) and Miscellaneous Provisions Act 1955 and the Majithia Wage Boards recommendations are before the Supreme Court of India and the decision of the Government would be subject to the final order of the Court. After the recommendations are published, these petitions may be amended if required, he added.

Bagga said that the Fourth Estate of our vibrant democracy is under threat of losing its well-nurtured fabric of plurality of ownership and the situation created by the Government’s decision will throw up a clear and imminent possibility of consolidating media power in the hands of a few. This coupled with the danger of large scale retrenchments as a consequence of possible closure of a large number of newspaper establishments throughout the country not only pose a great threat to the Fourth Estate but could also lead to colossal job losses in a job-scarce country such as ours.

Malaysian multisite order to G & J
Glunz & Jensen recently received a large order for 10 lines of punch/benders (ProVision Alliance), commercial conveyors and plate stackers. The order was placed by Sin Chew Daily, the leading Chinese-language newspaper in Malaysia with an average daily circulation of some 4,00,000 copies. Sin Chew is currently investing in CtP – and has decided to acquire these digital automation systems through Glunz & Jensen. The six of the lines are going to multiple Sin Chew printing sites throughout Malaysia. All 10 lines will be installed up to Q1, 2012.

“Our strategy and focus on automation is being accepted by the market. Our goal is to provide efficient cost and material reduction automation systems, which creates REAL value for each customer that requires a significant number of offset plates in the last hour prior to press start-up. The Glunz & Jensen system, which is easy to operate and maintain, does the job year after year. The system gives the end-user increased plate production output, better colour registration quality, reduction of labour cost and reduction of paper use on press start-up,” commented Keld Thorsen, CEO of Glunz & Jensen.

Moving forward ‘WIFAG Automation’ created,
combining the skills of WIFAG and Solna

After the acquisition of Solna by WIFAG Maschinenfabrik AG, current and future customers from both companies will benefit with the design of new and interesting offers. A new division, WIFAG Automation, has been created in which the skills of both WIFAG and Solna are concentrated. As a result, the products and expertise from both companies are united to form a more harmonized entity. With a combined team of more than 30 employees, WIFAG Automation and their partner companies, as-automotion AG and Swedish Graphic Systems, will be able to offer a combined expertise to both existing and prospective customers. WIFAG Automation is now in a unique position to offer complete solutions from one source. These consist primarily of production planning and management systems, control desks and systems for machine control as well as colour register, cut-off register and colour density controls.

Integrated retrofit solutions, whether modular or complete, illustrate interesting concepts for the conservation of value and production safety of the entire printing press. Innovative automation functions, whether reducing waste, or increasing the degree of automation or improving the service and diagnostic capabilities, are all a part of the product portfolio of WIFAG Automation, as well as the extension of existing presses with soft-proofing systems, fully automatic plate changers and roll logistics solutions.

Automation for efficient planning
and optimal resource conservation

Resource conservation in offset printing no longer has anything to do with a green image, but is an economical necessity. After all, over the entire life cycle, a newspaper printing system consumes materials worth around five times the price of the system. In view of the high variable costs for paper, energy, and other process-related components, investment costs for resource-conserving technologies are generally recovered within a few years. This is why the WAZ Mediengruppe is investing a low double-digit million euro sum in two new 48-page COLORMAN, XXL autoprint presses that will be installed in a completely new building with special attention being paid to energy and sustainability aspects. As per Dr Klemens Berktold, manager of all printing operations at the WAZ Mediengruppe, “With all the savings potential that comes with the new printing center and its key element, the new COLORMAN, XXL autoprint presses, we will have a fast ROI and be well equipped to respond to further market developments. This is a groundbreaking investment for the WAZ Mediengruppe and our avowal of faith in the future of the printed newspaper.”

The COLORMAN autoprint from manroland prefers to simply print, and format-variable at that: this enables the newspapers and inserts to be produced in two different formats: with strict adherence to time schedules and meeting exact specifications for materials consumption and reproducibility. The COLORMAN knows: no other newspaper printing system can hold a candle to it in this regard.

For the COLORMAN, XXL autoprint, job changeovers depend on form on the day. Only with the small difference that it is in the same top form every day. Automatic changing of newspaper products can be relied on to take place in a precision measured in seconds with automatic plate changing on as many printing units as desired: simply one touch. At the same time, all data for the new production is loaded in the press. After completion of the constant job changeover times, the COLORMAN, XXL autoprint is immediately ready for the next job. If a new format is to be produced, this changeover also takes place automatically. Here the press makes life very easy for the operator. Waste is minimized because when production starts all settings are correct: for amazing results time and again and for profits that are not diminished by high waste rates. Furthermore, groundbreaking services enable unplanned downtimes to be avoided to a great extent. Thus one has production and operating costs under control – always. These days, industrial-scale print production without an optimized material flow is unthinkable. AUROSYS takes care of automated reel transport, centralized reel preparation, and delivers the reels to the reel splicer as needed.
