Arab World remains the most deadly
region for journalists

Sixty-four journalists and other media workers were killed world-wide because of their professional activities in 2011, with nearly half of them killed in Pakistan, Iraq, Libya and Yemen, said WAN-IFRA. Ten journalists were killed in Pakistan for the second consecutive year, making it again the most deadly country for journalists. “When journalists are attacked and killed merely for doing their jobs, the entire society suffers. The right of all citizens to the free flow of information is diminished by these acts. These murders must be prosecuted thoroughly and the perpetrators brought to justice,” said Christoph Riess, CEO of WAN-IFRA.

The Arab region was the world’s most dangerous region for media professionals, with twenty-two journalists killed. The brutal repression that followed widespread popular uprisings in Bahrain, Egypt, Libya, Syria, Tunisia and Yemen cost the lives of sixteen journalists. Journalism in Iraq remains a dangerous profession, as six journalists lost their lives in the country last year.

Mexico remains the most dangerous country for journalists in the Western hemisphere, with six journalists in 2011, as coverage of organised crime and corruption have put journalists in the line of fire.

The 2011 death toll, released after an investigation into all potential media murders, compares with 66 killed in 2010, 99 killed in 2009, 70 killed in 2008, 95 killed in 2007 and 110 killed in 2006. Though many journalists are killed covering war and conflict, they’re also targeted and murdered in many countries for investigating organised crime, drug trafficking, corruption and other crimes. They are often killed with impunity, with nobody brought to justice for the murders in the majority of cases. Journalists and other media workers were killed in 27 countries in 2011: Afghanistan (2); Azerbaijan (1); Bahrain (1); Brazil (3); Colombia (1); Democratic Republic of Congo (1); Dominican Republic (1); Egypt (2); Honduras (1); India (2); Iraq (6); Libya (5); Mexico (6); Pakistan (10); Panama (1); Paraguay (1); Peru (2); Philippines (2); Russia (1); Sierra Leone (1); Somalia (3); Syria (1); Thailand (1); Tunisia (1); Uganda (1); Vietnam (1); and Yemen (6). Several press freedom organisations track the number of journalists killed each year. The numbers vary based on the criteria used by different associations. WAN-IFRA’s figures include all media workers killed in the line of duty or targeted because of their work. It also includes cases where the motive for the killings is unsure or where official investigations have not been completed.

Kodak marks another
milestone in newspaper segment

US-based newspaper The Albany Herald becomes 100th customer for Kodak PF-N non process plates
To improve prepress efficiency, the Albany Herald selected Kodak PF-N non process plates for its location in Albany, Georgia (US), where, under the umbrella of Gray Publishing, it prints a daily newspaper. The publisher chose the Kodak PF-N non process plates for their exceptional imaging quality, productivity enhancements, potential cost savings and added environmental attributes. With the installation, the Albany Herald became Kodak’s 100th PF-N non process plate customer.

According to Todd Bigger, global current marketing director of Offset Solutions at Kodak, the customer base for PF-N plates has grown tremendously as more newspapers, like the Albany Herald, opt for prepress solutions that not only improve productivity and image quality, but also their environmental footprint. “With the use of process-free technology, companies are able to reach higher levels of both sustainability and efficiency. With this latest installation milestone, it is clear that the movement towards process-free technology is truly gaining momentum in the newspaper publishing industry,” said Bigger.

Kodak PF-N non process plates can reduce costs by completely eliminating the need for processors, related maintenance, and processing chemistry expenses. These plates use a write-the-image, non-ablative technology, where final print preparation occurs on press as part of the standard make-ready process without any press contamination. By removing the traditional processing step, Kodak PF-N plates shorten the platemaking cycle and eliminate the need for any special handling of processing chemicals. This simplifies platemaking process enabling PF-N plates to deliver more jobs per shift with faster turnaround times, and ultimately saving companies both time and money.

Replacing a conventional plate system, the Albany Herald installed the PF-N plates in 2011, and the company has been more than satisfied with its decision. “The plates are everything we thought they would be. The quality is excellent and the longevity of the plates is also really good. They are exceeding our expectations,” said Lynn Ridder, operations director at the Albany Herald. At the Albany Herald, the PF-N plates are used on the Kodak Trendsetter News platesetter, which is known for its stability and outstanding image quality. The newspaper also relies on Kodak Prinergy workflow system and Kodak Preps imposition software for enhanced workflow productivity and improved automation.

Reducing waste levels with QuadTech
Norway's largest publisher of consumer magazines, Hjemmet Mortensen revealed that they had reduced waste during the make-ready stage by at least 40 percent after upgrading their Goss M4000 1225mm, 32-page web-offset press with QuadTech's register guidance and ribbon control technology. "Almost all our output of magazines is destined for the domestic market, where the top-selling titles have runs of 1,50,000. As a result, we perform relatively short runs, with as many as 15 change-overs per day. So we are always seeking ways to reduce make-ready time and start-up waste," commented Harald Andersen, Hjemmet Mortensen's technical director.

"The M4000 press performed consistently since Mortensen commissioned it for the Oslo plant in 1994. We have enjoyed many years of reliable service from QuadTech's RGS IV technology on both our presses, and we felt the time was right to refurbish the press with new generation press control technology that could achieve registration and colour accuracy in a shorter time, apart from reducing wastes," added Andersen.

Further retrofit success for ABB
One of the leading suppliers of automation solutions for the newspaper production industry, ABB announced a further order for its retrofit solutions for Wifag printing presses. The operator displays are also being replaced by new models. All new systems will be fitted into the existing cabinets. The retrofitting of the two printing towers and two reelstands means that the removed hardware components can then serve as spare parts for the remaining units of the presses at St Gallen-Winkeln. This in turn means that the print center of the St Galler Tagblatt can keep its presses running for a long time to come. The new systems will be commissioned in the course of 2012.
