Direct Port Delivery Award 2017

Leading newsprint importer and distributor Poddar Global Limited has been honoured with the Direct Port Delivery (DPD) Award 2017 conferred on them by the Central Board of Excise & Customs at a recent function in Mumbai. The award is designed under the government’s ‘Ease of Doing Business’ objective.

DPD (Direct Port Delivery) is an initiative by the Indian Government introduced though the Central Board of Excise & Customs (CBEC), Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT) and other public sector organisations. With the ‘Ease of Doing Business’ as its prime objective, the government has continuously been pushing to promote cross border trades and businesses by minimising transaction costs and dwell time at the ports.

Recognised as the largest importer of newsprint with DPD deliveries from JNPT, Poddar Global has been awarded with the Direct Port Delivery (DPD) Awards 2017 by the Central Board of Excise & Customs. Eminent dignitaries present at the award function organised recently in Mumbai included Ananya Ray, IRS, Member (Custom, Legal, Central Excise and Service Tax), CBEC and Dr John Joseph, Chief Commissioner of Customs, JNPT, Government of India, among others.

DPD has been aggressively promoted at JNPT, which handles almost 55-60 percent of the country’s containerised cargo. To promote the DPD facility many public notices have been circulated, and 24x7 RMS (Risk Management System) facilitation centre, full-fledged DPD Cell, panel discussions on TV, Booklet on FAQs on DPD and several other steps have so far been taken up. Such steps would help to facilitate trade and implement the programme successfully.

DPD facility has been extended to top importers whose goods are in FCL (Full Container Load) category and facilitated by RMS for ‘no assessment and no examination’. Due to DPD, clearance of containers, which used to take a week earlier, is now taking only upto 48 hours and in this, an importer saves anywhere between INR 10,000 and INR 60,0000 per TEU, apart from reducing the goods delivery time. Moreover, implementation of DPD is resulting in the reduction of inventory cost, apart from decongesting the port roads as the frequent ‘to and fro’ movements to CFS are avoided.
