o eliminate condensate on the chill rollers, preventing print defects such as smearing and ink picking and allowing web presses to run at higher speeds, Goss International has launched a new enhancement for existing heatset dryers. Available as a retrofit on all Goss Ecotherm and Ecoweb dryers as well as some dryers manufactured by other suppliers, the new Ecochill enhancement uses proven technologies from Goss Ecocool dryers, removing the requirement for a smoke tunnel. The largest privately owned printing company in North America, Quad/Graphics tested the first Ecochill enhancement at one of its printing facilities and subsequently ordered six more units for installation on double-web presses. Two of the Ecochill units to be installed by the company will include optional remoistening capabilities.

The compact Ecochill unit is positioned between the existing dryer and chill roll stand and includes three additional small-diameter, concave chill rollers, like those used in the newer Ecocool dryers. The aluminum rollers are non-driven, requiring no additional power, and the units are available in 1020 mm, 1460 mm and 2060 mm (40, 57 and 80 inch) widths to accommodate most traditional web press formats. Mounted to the existing chill roll frame, the integrated unit with the additional rollers eliminates condensate and improves web control. The Ecochill unit is equipped with Teflon and chrome plated silicone applicator rollers which are fed from an existing mixer to further reduce ink picking and smearing along with build-up on downstream rollers.

Meanwhile, leading Greek newspaper publisher, Naftemporiki P Athanassiades has ordered Goss Community tower additions and enhancements to keep pace with advertiser and contract print demands. The upgrade programme is due to start in Dec 2009 at the company’s state-of-the-art production facility in Koropi, east of the capital Athens.

The Church of Scientology will install a Goss Sunday 2000 press in early 2010, premiering a new web offset production facility in addition to an existing extensive digital print operation in Los Angeles used to produce its collateral materials and publications. Print quality, operability and low-waste efficiency were key factors in the press selection, according to Mollie Hoertling, executive vice president of project management for the Church of Scientology. Goss Automatic Transfer technology will also enable language changes for various products to be completed on-the-fly, without stopping the press. The press will also be equipped with a sheeter.

Aslo, Sri Lankan printer and publisher ANCL (Associated Newspaper Ceylon Limited) successfully went into production with a new Goss Magnum 4 press. The investment was made to increase page and colour capacity at ANCL’s Lake House publishing facility in Colombo.

The single-width Goss Magnum 4 press is configured as one four-high tower and one mono unit with a folder providing quarter-fold capability to print a wide variety of newspaper and commercial formats. With a 578 mm cut-off, the press is capable of running at speeds up to 40,000cph. “As one of South-East Asia’s largest newspaper publishers, ANCL was looking for a press that could combine flexibility with ease-of-use and high-quality, reliable operation. With over 40,000 similar units installed and in operation around the world, the Magnum 4 press provides all those things for printers for whom flexibility and high productivity is key factor,” commented Peter Kirwan, vice president of Asia Pacific newspaper sales for Goss International.

ANCL publishes a large number of national and regional newspapers. The company also has a commercial division that prints books, telephone directories, government publications and newspaper supplements.
