Dedication, courage and hard work are inseparable parts of journalism, and journalists who actually perform their duty know very well the importance of these elements. By their courage and hard work many times, journalists have proved their commitment towards well being of the society.


Best of India’s journalists who remain to the highest standard of ethics, accuracy and fairness in their work were awarded by Ramnath Goenka Foundation’s ‘Excellence in Journalism Awards 2008 - 2009’ on July 22, 2010. Smt Pratibha Devisingh Patil, president of India conferred upon the trophy of the awards and the related cash prize to 31 journalists in 19 different categories including newly introduced three: 'on the spot reporting', 'investigative reporting', and 'commentary and interpretative writing'. The prize distribution ceremony was followed by a panel discussion on paid news, ‘Good News is Paid News, Credibility is for Sale’.

The jury members of the awards included the renowned Indian personalities: Dr Bakul H Dholakia, former director, IIM Ahmedabad; Deepak Parekh, chairman, HDFC; Fali S Nariman, senior advocate, Supreme Court of India; Keshub Mahindra, chairman, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd; Dr M S Swaminathan, member of parliament - Rajya Sabha; Naresh Chandra, former cabinet secretary and ambassador of India to the United States; N R Narayana Murthy, mentor & founder, Infosys Technologies Ltd; Rama Bijapurkar, marketing consultant and author of ‘We are like that only’; Shobhana Bhartia, chairman and editorial director, HT Media Ltd; film director Shyam Benegal and television personality and columnist Karan Thapar.

The Winners

Like always that print still rules the world of journalism, this year also, print journalists lead their counterpart from broadcasting in the Ramnath Goenka Foundation’s ‘Excellence in Journalism Awards 2008 - 2009’. The winners include (19 in print section and 12 in broadcasting): Siddharth Varadarajan from The Hindu who received ‘journalist of the year award’ in print and Arnab Goswami from Times Now bagged the same award in broadcasting; Vijay Pratap Singh (posthumously) was given ‘journalism of courage award’; ‘reporting from J&K and Northeast award’ went to Teresa Rehman of Tehelka in print and Arijit Sen of CNN-IBN in broadcasting; Geetashree from Outlook received ‘journalism awards for Hindi’ in print and Abhisar Sharma from Aaj Tak in broadcasting; Abhijit Vasant Ghorpade from Loksatta received ‘regional languages award’ for print and Chunduri Venkata Satyanarayana from TV-9 bagged the same award for broadcasting; ‘for environmental reporting’, Varghese C Thomas from Malayala Manorama and Amey Vitthaldas Tirodkar from IBN Lokmat bagged the wards in print and broadcasting respectively; Jiji Paul of Malayala Manorama in print bagged the ‘award of uncovering India invisible’ and Kamal Khan of NDTV India received the award for broadcasting; Puja Mehra from Business Today received ‘business and economic journalism award’ for print and Shweta Rajpal Kohli from NDTV for broadcasting; ‘sports journalism award’ gone to Mini Kapoor from The Indian Express in print and to Debayan Sen and Dhruv Varshney both from ZEE Sports in broadcasting; Harneet Singh from The Indian Express received ‘film and television journalism award’ in print while the award gone to Suresh Mathew of CNN-IBN for broadcasting; ‘for on-the-spot- reporting’ the team of Hindustan Times, Mumbai has been selected and Shamsher Singh from Headlines Today received the same award for broadcasting; ‘investigative reporting award’ was given to Shyamlal Yadav from India Today in print and Rajesaheb Nadaf from TV-9 in broadcasting; Joseph Leahy from Financial Times in print section was given ‘foreign correspondent covering India award’; while Saubhik Chakrabarti from The Indian Express in print section was awarded with ‘commentary and interpretative writing’; Mahesh Gupthan from Malayala Manorama received, ‘civic journalism award’ in print; while Harish Damodaran bagged ‘journalism awards for non- fiction’ (books) for India’s New Capitalists: Caste, Business and Industry in a Modern Nation; Aditi Phadnis and Pranab Dhal Samanta from Business Standard and The Indian Express respectively in print section received the ‘award for political reporting’ and Ajit Anjum from News 24 bagged the same award in broadcasting; Madhuparna Das from The Indian Express bagged ‘Sanjiv Sinha Memorial award’ for reporting and Amanpreet Singh from The Indian Express bagged ‘Priya Chandrasekhar Memorial award’ for editing.
