“Working closely with Jagran, India’s leading vernacular newspaper, makes us confident that our proven spray bar technology will be well accepted in India,” said Prem Bandhu Gupta, director, Baldwin India in conversation with editors of AAN, who recently visited their smart state-of-the-art manufacturing plant in Gurgaon near New Delhi.

With the aim to achieve top quality standards, there has always been a need to bring in more efficiency and technology in all aspects of the printing process. Today’s newspaper groups are looking to adopt such technology to meet their challenges. Higher print speeds, full colour production, shorter time to print and cost control call for proven and dependable solutions. It is in this space that Baldwin Technology Company offers a range of solutions for newspaper as well as sheetfed and commercial web printers.

Recently, Baldwin’s Spray Dampening system was tested at the Noida unit of the flagship newspaper of Jagran Prakashan Limited (JPL), Dainik Jagran which is India’s largest read daily being published in 37 editions across 11 states from 30 different facilities. The pilot installation was made on a Manugraph’s Cityline press in June 2009 and the results were very good. This led to a significant order for Baldwin India Pvt Ltd from Jagran Prakashan for their six-tower Cityline press in Kanpur. A total of 48 spray bars were retrofitted at site. This retrofit replaced their conventional brush dampening system with Baldwin’s Litho Spray Cobra spray dampening technology.

Baldwin India is also proud to announce having received further orders for spray dampening system for 27 towers (four press lines) from Manugraph India all meant for various Jagran locations.

Though spray dampening may be new to the Indian market, Baldwin has over 60,000 spray bars in operation worldwide on single, double and triple width presses. In India, some of the major users of Baldwin’s spray bar technology are industry leaders like Deccan Chronicle, ABPL, DNA, Rajasthan Patrika, The Daily Thanthi and the Tribune among others.

Looking at the large Indian market for single width web presses, Baldwin Technology Company initiated manufacture of the Litho Spray Cobra system at Baldwin India. As per Gupta, Baldwin looks forward to working with all web press manufacturers, either with retrofitting or on new press projects.

Commenting further on spray dampening, Gupta explained the short return on investment as a compelling argument for installing a spray dampening system. In today’s competitive world, everybody seeks to ensure the full justification of the investment they are expected to make. In this regard, the ROI for spray dampening can be achieved within 9-12 months for newspaper publishers having a daily print volume of around 1-1.5 lakh copies. Savings in paper wastage, fountain solution consumption, ink consumption, power and water consumption coupled with reduced maintenance time make the Baldwin system an attractive option.

Baldwin’s new industry leading technology, LithoSpray Cobra delivers excellent performance in spray dampening for newspaper presses. All spray bars are equipped standard with Baldwin’s patented Constant C technology solving the problem of clogged nozzles. Constant C provides an ‘air curtain’ around the nozzles, keeping ink mist and debris away. (Constant C can be retrofitted on existing Baldwin spray bars). Litho Spray Cobra is an easy-to-install and cost-effective system which provides considerable savings throughout the printing process.

Another breakthrough product from Baldwin is Jetstream. A web cleaning dust removal system that extends the maintenance/cleaning interval, improves quality and reduces downtime. It combines the latest in aerodynamic nozzle technology, web ionization and brushes, all in one turnkey system. Jetstream has automatic splice detection and is available for web width up to four meters. Its compact design minimizes the space required for installation. This web cleaning system cleans surfaces on almost all substrates and removes up to 99 percent of all dust particles greater than 30m and up to 95 percent of all particles greater than 10m. Apart from ensuring low power consumption, the overall reduction in dust contamination provides improved health and safety conditions to the operators in the machine room.

Being one of the leading international suppliers of process automation equipment for the printing and publishing industries, Baldwin Technology Company offers its customers a broad range of market-leading technologies, products and systems that enhance the quality of printed products and improve the economic and environmental efficiency of printing presses. Headquartered in the US, the company has operations strategically located in the major print markets and distributes their products via a global sales and service infrastructure. Their technology and products include cleaning systems, fluid management and ink control systems, web press protection systems and drying systems and the related consumables.

Baldwin has now been manufacturing, selling and supporting their products in India for 10 years. Aside from refrigerated circulation systems the company has installed over fifty IR drying systems on sheetfed/web presses across the country. Also, Baldwin recently acquired Nordson UV systems and the company looks forward to introducing this world-class technology to the sheetfed and newspaper segments in India.
