To optimise insert business for daily newspaper Daily News, Bangkok-based Si-Phya Publishing Co is using two new Muller Martini ProLiners – the first insertion devices of their kind to be put into operation in Asia. As Si-Phya often jackets its broadsheet Daily News using a heatset commercial product, the two ProLiners, each equipped with four feeders, support three different types of production.

One option is to open the two-page or four-page carrier medium, which is fed in via the first feeder, and insert it directly into the newspaper from the printing press via the second feeder. An intermediate opening is then used to re-open the carrier medium and the newspaper, after which two (editorial or commercial) inserts are added in the third and fourth feeders. Another approach is for both inserts to be placed in the carrier medium alongside the newspaper, with no second opening. A conventional newspaper insertion process is also a possibility; this involves placing the two inserts in the newspaper without a carrier medium.

All this means that Si-Phya has three flexible options for making the advertising environment in the Daily News, which can feature up to 40 pages, even more appealing, and for generating additional advertising revenues. Asia’s first two ProLiners were commissioned at the end of May. The two machines were assembled and subjected to rigorous testing at the Muller Martini plant in Switzerland prior to delivery, ensuring that the commissioning process in Bangkok went without a hitch.
